Remove it—or build on what is already there?

Age is a starting detail, not a diagnosis. The useful question is whether the existing material is suitable for the work your home needs.

Start with what you know

Separate observations from assumptions. “The bedroom is uncomfortable” describes a problem; “all the insulation needs removal” proposes a solution that still needs evidence. Ask an assessor to show the condition and explain the recommendation.

Three conversations to have

01

Material appears sound

Ask whether air sealing, correcting gaps, or adding insulation would address the problem without full removal. Keeping suitable material may be an option.

02

Material is damaged or affected by pests

Ask what portion is affected, whether selective or complete removal is proposed, and who is addressing the source of damage.

03

The material is unknown

Pause before disturbing it. Establish whether a qualified specialist must assess it before ordinary insulation work proceeds.

Ask for the reasoning in writing

A useful estimate connects each action to an observed condition. For example: the identified section is damaged, access is available through a particular opening, and disposal is included. Ask where the inspection was incomplete and what could change once the work begins.

Photos taken by the provider can make the proposal easier to understand. They are not a substitute for the written scope. There is no need to enter an attic or crawlspace just to gather material for this website.

Make the comparison fair

If two providers recommend different scopes, ask each to explain the tradeoff. One may be quoting removal only, while the other includes air sealing or replacement. Record those differences using the comparison checklist.
